    In Minneapolis
I am currently in MN, and will be playing at Eye of Horus this Friday evening (also doing a workshop there tomorrow, Thursday). I have spoken to Blade about doing a concert there a week from Sunday, but with his wife's health issues, I am not sure that will happen, so I'm hoping to have B* people show up at Eye of Horus. It's a very nice shop with a very cool gallery/concert space. Please spread the word on this as I have no idea how many people I'll actually reach by internet.

Also, please call me if you want to get together for lunch/coffee/dinner tonight, Thursday, or Friday, or if you'd be in any way excited to see me and Anna: 323-369-2649. Or Anna's phone, 323-646-0380.

    Me, married.
Merry belated Yule. And happy New Moon.

So, I'm getting married tomorrow. A few of you met Anna at FSG last summer, or perhaps at Cat's house or at Starwood. It's been a year together, and I had decided a while back that if things were good after a year I'd consider marriage. I love her, and things are really good. By the time you read this, it will be a done deal.

Other than that, January is slow, as it always is for me. It's given me time to think, ponder, obsess, and neurose (if that's a word). My new interest is coin collecting. Anna got me into it, and I got really excited about it. It's a place where history and art meet, and I love both. So I've been doing research and caring for the coins I've managed to pick up over the last few months.

Other news: My birthday is in one month. I'll be ancient. Anyone who wants to visit CA and celebrate with me is welcome.

    OMG
Today (and yesterday) I played at what was meant to be a renaissance festival in south-eastern California, not far from Palm Springs. It turned out to be held in a trailor park. (Really!). It was tiny, the size of a postage stamp, and had maybe 12 or 15 vendors. There was a booth run by AmerIndians making tradaitional fry bread, but they were calling it gypsy fry bread---to be renaissance mind you. They were dressed in jeans and tee shirts. The gypsies were. I mean the Indians.

By far the most interesting part of the whole ordeal, or perhaps fiasco, was that my sets, and those of Lord Rusty the juggler (my good buddy Chris Yeats), were break sets for the electric Country bands that were actually playing on the stage (we were on the ground in front of the audience seating).

At one point I had a show on the "other" stage, about 20 yards away from the stage where the electric Country band was. How much do you think my audience, which was 20 times theirs, could hear?

It was an experience. At least that's what I tell myself.

    The trip so far
I'm writing this from Turtle Hill in beautiful New Jersey. It actually is very beautiful here, by the way. Though due to last month's floods, half the bridges are out, and the last hour of my trip here took two hours. Not pleasant after already driving for 6 hours...

I was at Starwood all week. It was nice, and it was the first time I've ever attended a Pagan fest as a paid attendee rather than a performer/presenter. I really liked having no responsibilities for once. I just did what I felt like doing... all night drum circles, Bluegrass music all day at Phil's cafe, hanging around with adorable Kerry, seeing quite a few people I haven't seen in years, and attending Lasara's "flirting to get laid" workshop (informative...). I did end up with a daily gig at Phil's cafe, and sold a ton of CDs, so it was a working vacation after all. (I'm leaving out the juicy bits...you'll have to ask me).

So this week I'm playing a show in Tacoma on Thursday, and in Virginia at Esoterica books on Friday, then at Turtle Hill on Sunday afternoon. Larissa and Cat have all details (I just go where I'm told...). I'm also doing Ritual with Larissa on Wednesday, and with Cat on Saturday. Busy week... Also call or e-mail me to hang out in NJ/NY in the next two weeks.

Next week I take a rest for a few days, then head west. I play the Bristol faire near Chicago on August 5 and 6, then I need to be back in L.A. by August 11th for a gig. Lotta driving, but I think I'll make it. There's a possibility I still may show up in Mn, waiting to hear on that...

See y'all somewhere along the way.

    Minesota plans
So the time draws near when I leave for Kenosha WI, then NY, then back to Kenosha by way of MN (that make sense?). I am wondering if anyone in MN would like to take on the PIA task of maybe setting up a house concert for me? For MN B* people and invited guests and folk music fans? I'll be your best friend!

Let me know by my own e-mail, kennyfiddler@aol.com . It would be great to have a gig while I'm visiting you guys.

    July plans
    Hi everyone.

So, here's the deal. I've been contracted by Bristol Renaissance Faire in Kenosha, Wisc. (Chicago area) for the weekends of July 15-16, and August 4-5. Starwood falls the week after the first weekend date, July 18-24th or so. That leaves me with about a week and a half free, fom July 25ish through Lammas.

I was considering visiting Minnesota in that time. Anyone else who'd like a visit, please let me know! I could show up anywhere across PA, Ohio, Indianna, Illinois, Wisconson, Minnesota... Of course a house concert, allowing me to make some kind of money, would be welcome and absolutely appreciated. Let me know what you guys think.

Hope to see a bunch of you,

    Kenny

    Happy Imbolc
As the subject line says, Happy Imbolc!!

    Here's a very cool website: www.wgfswpa.org

Explaination: While doing laundry yesterday, I picked up a free New Age magazine. You know the type, badly written articles on self empowerment to fill space between botox ads... But an article caught my eye about a group of teenage girls in PA who are boycotting (or actually, as they say, "girlcotting") Abercrombie and Fitch because that chain has been selling tee shirts with slogans the girls feel are demeaning. An example: (written across the wearer's chest) "Who needs brains when you have these?" Another: "Blonds are adored, brunettes are ignored." Anyway, the girlcott grew large enough that A&F are now pulling the tee shirts!!

I was struck by this because just Tuesday, I went to an anti-Bush rally in Hollywood timed during the State of the Union address (I actually went by accident. Sunset Blvd was blocked off for the rally and I just couldn't drive any farther, so I parked and joined in). Of course even among the protestors, a general sentiment was "what can we do about it, really?" Then I read this article and checked out the website. 23 girls in PA caused a huge clothing chain to rethink their policy. I was inspired...

So, those are my politically aware Imbolc birthday thoughts. Now I'm going to spend two hours tutoring a hyper-hyper-hyperactive kid (did I mention his ADHD?), then drive to Burbank for Imbolc ritual. Yay.

    L.A. B* and my birthday.
Well, after years of not having a coven to work with, I have begun sewing the seeds of covenhood here in L.A. I learned that Sean was back in town (and fairly close to my place), and asked him if he was interested in circling and teaching. He was. So I called some people I had taught in Wicca classes I'd done for stores, and put some ads out in local Occult-y venues.

The result: Sean and I have 4 students who seem interested and fairly steady. We've done a few moons so far, holding classes during feast, and we'll be doing Imbolc tomorrow.

(Which by the way happens to be my birthday. Although I'm trying not to think too much about it).

Anyway, we're a little disadvantaged here working without a priestess, but we're coping. (Any visiting priestesses will be adored and revered). The women in the group are doing an admirable job of learning ritual format and stumbling through sweeping, casting, wine and cakes, etc. It's been so many years since I've had to start a coven up from scratch, (well, in fact, it's never happened before...). I'm not even sure how to approach the subject of cakes.

    So wish me luck.

Thanks to the few people who've gotten back to me on my manuscript so far. I appreciate the feedback. Working dilligently. It's about 160 pgs now.

I had a nibble from a small press interested in re-publishing The Flowering Rod. I'll let you know.

    Later,

    Updates
Armed with the observations of my most diligent proof reader, I updated the whole B* thing on my site. It's much better now, thanks.

It is raining and pouring here in L.A. It usually doesn't do this till February. I have a gig tonight, and will have to drive to Glandale in the rain (with bad brakes...gotta get to the mechanic!!). The Rose Bowl parade looked so pathetic this morning. The TV cameras were foggy and had drops of rain on the lenses. I feel bad for all the marching band kids here from Indianna and Kansas, marching in the California monsoon.

Well, there goes another calendar year...
In a month I'll be a year older. As for wiser...that remains to be seen.

So as a prelude to trying to put a B* group together out here on the left coast, I created a B* presence on my site: www.kennyklein.net/bluestar.htm It's as accurate and PC as I could make it (so far...only two essays on it at this point). Let me know if you have good or bad comments...

I've been working on a novel. It's about a third done, and I'd love comments and advice on development. If you give me an e-mail to send it to, I'd be glad to have it read. It is not Craft related in any way. It's a novel based on my experiences in the early '80s in NYC.

I got an IPOD Nano for X-mas-yule-akkah. It's very cool. Yea, I know, YOU'VE had one for a hundred years. Well, now I have one too. I've been downloading like a fiend (how exactly do fiends download?).

I hope everyone in B* and in my circle of friends has a lovely new calendar year!!

new B* on the west coast
I spoke to Sean Hunt last night (a name from the distant past for a few of us...). He and I agreed that we should try to get a B* group started here on the left coast. I'm going to start putting up flyers, posting on sites, trying to find new students out here. A daunting task for one who is no longer doing public lectures and classes... If anyone has people out here to refer, or knows of a site where I nmight post, let me know.

Happy New Year (again... but I didn't watch the ball drop on Samhain).

    Here it is almost Samhain!!
Well, Northern Ren Fair ended last weekend. I'm sad to see it end. It was great income, and fun, for the most part (trolls notwithstanding). Now begins my winter inactivity.

I am of course still in school---midsemester, and the lethargy begins. We had a GREAT model in life drawing class last night. I want to do a painting of her. No such luck---I learned today that the model we'll have for painting class next month is my least favorite model in the whole program. Yeesh. This woman hardly speaks English, so she never understands directions. She also never carries a watch (most models bring a digital stop watch). You tell her to do one minute poses, and she will inevitably do a series of 10-30 second poses followed by a 12 minute pose. Then, in a long pose, she falls asleep and begins to droop. The pose she starts with is about four feet from the mid-session pose. See why I love this woman?

So I'll be spending the week seeking gainful winter employment and cursing at models under my breath.

I'm still planning to fly to the NYC area, but I want to wait a few days and see how Geo is doing before I make any plans. I'll let everyone know what's up as I know.

    What's everyone doing for Samhain?

    Another day in the Surreal
Gods, October 11th already? I was just getting used to September. Where did THAT go?

I bought a new fiddle. It's beautuful. Flamed maple back and sides. I've never seen a fiddle with flamed maple back and sides before. And it was cheap. And they gave me the crappiest case and bow in the store---the case was proboaly once black pleather, but someone covered it with contact paper in imitation wood grain print. Wow! I felt so proud to carry THAT home from the violin shop. (That's how snooty violin dealers treat you when they sell you a cheap violin. But it's beautiful, did I mention that?).

I have one more weekend of Northern Faire, then I have a whole lot of leisure time. I'm still making plans re. a NY trip---I want to wait and see what happens with Geo's hospital situation, since I really want to see the Turtle Hill people when I come out.

Some highlights of Faire this past weekend:
-A 10 or 11 year old patron kid showed up in complete troll costume (painted black from head to foot, wearing a leather bodice and skirt, and fangs), made herself at home in the troll garden, and played with the troll props (the actual trolls mostly ignored her and wondered where her parents were).
-A blond woman was hanging about the pub where the participants lounge, wearing a flimsy fairy costume, clutching her breasts and loudly saying "I'm not wearing a bra!! I'm so drunk!!" and telling jokes about how to make a woman sound like a dolphin.
-There was a small birthday party behind a booth after hours, where the birthday girl and her guy were serving a vile Hungarian drink called Unicum Schvock. We surmised that it was made from fermented road kill with generous amounts of licorice added to kill the road kill flavor (which didn't work). I heartily recommend that if you have the chance to drink Unicum Schvock, you pass it up.
-The black and pearls dance was changed to the tophat and corset dance, which I found pretty boring. (I was asleep in my tent, alone, by midnight). But I looked damn good! Next weekend is black and pearls, but having worn my tux and tophat to the tophat and corset dance, I plan on wearing my lime green pimp suit.
-I spent a good deal of time contemplating the surreality of my life. But my shows were good.

In a week I can stop being a ren faire geek for the winter and start complaining about playing fiddle in red neck bars. Oh, the anticipation!

    Thursday
It appears I'm still dealing with the aftermath of certain postings in certain LJ journals. Let me clearly say here that I spoke out because a court order had been violated, and now that the situation has been corrected, I really don't care to sp[eak about it anymore.

    On to other things.

Faire continues to go well. Two more weeks left, and then I will sink into the listless inertia that is my life in the winter months. I am doing Gen Con in Annaheim (as a peformer), so any geeks in SoCal are welcome to join me! I'm sure I'll be doing the usual red neck bar gigs and trailer park pic nics (oh yes, they are fun!).

I will be firming up my plans to come out east in the next week or two. I'll get back to everyone who wrote me on that in a short time. Thanks for all the very wonderful offers of hospitality and company. You'll all be sick of me soon enough.

I continue my experiments in internet dating. I'm enjoying seeing just how crazy and unnerving L.A. women can be. I will write a book one day.

    I'm off to acrylic class.

You know, last night, writing in my journal at 2 in the morning after a day with the world's hottest henna artist, I posted to the Blue Star page rather than my own page. From now on, I'm posting here. (Unless I don't).

A few people have asked me about my plans to visit NYC/NJ in a few weeks. Plans are still fairly nebulus, but I think I'll try to fly to NJ around Samhain, and stay for a week or two. Anyone wishing a visit---or to meet me at the airport---please let me know. I don't have a ticket yet, so I don't have dates. I'm waiting til faire is over, Oct 16, to see where I stand financially and workwise before booking a flight. Then, let's pop the cork on that champagne bottle and let the dancing begin!!!!!

Today was quiet, I painted (in painting class) and slept a bit. But don't imagine my life is boring---thursday I play at a hellish red neck bar in San Bernadino!! Oh the glory, the joy!! You have not lived until you watch white trailer park kids finish line dancing to a Country set, and then begin dirty dancing to Hip Hop. Yea, it's a marvelous sight. They also have a whole birthday celebration thing where they call up all the boys celebrating a birthday, and any girl who wants comes out, line dances and drops her drawers to show her thong. Then it's the girls who have birthdays, and the boys line dance and take off their tops.

Yes, I only play the classiest joints.

Friday its back to Ren Fair. We're in mid season, 3 more weekends. The weather is lovely in Gilroy (garlic capitol of the world!), and the leaves are just beginning to turn. It's nice. No women flashed me last weekend, but I am ever hopeful.

    A new day
Well, there's been some drama, but having had my legal rights observed, I'm over it.

It's rainy and cool in L.A., perfect weather. I really miss seasons. I watched "Alice" yesterday, a Woody Allen movie with Mia Farrow. Like all W.A. movies, it's set in NYC. I was a little saddened by watching the scenes of winter in Manhattan. I really miss it! Anyway, really good movie. The actress who played Alice at 12 years old is the daughter of my best friend from my high school senior days, and the neice of Caroline, my first love. (The best friend and the first love were brother and sister...did you get that?).

I'm deciding whether I want to walk in the rain to the gym. Hmmm...the gym will still be there tomorrow...

No, OK, off to the gym.

    A happy entry
Ren faire went fairly well this weekend. My shows were well attended and the weather was beautiful. I drove a car full of trolls home to L.A. I recommend not doing that to anyone who might entertain thoughts of it. They chatter.

I'm still looking for a Photoshop disk. I need one yesterday. I live at 1146 North Madison Ave, L.A., CA 90029. Let's see if we can make software magic happen....

I'm sure you'll all learn that I just posted aomething unpleasant on this stupid friggin LJ site. I'm really regretting this idea, guys... Anyway, I want to say to those of you who know who I mean, I love you guys. You're the best (yes, Keith, that definately means you).

Updating you on my surreal life...
I just did the Northern California Renaissance Festival opening last weekend. The first week of seven. It was a little dissapointing. Apparantly the TV ads were meant to begin running last week, but don't begin til this week due to some clerical error. Ah well, I still had fun and made some money, so next week will be bigger and brighter. Oh, a first for this faire---I was flashed during my first show of the weekend. By a woman with breasts completely worth looking at (rarer still!). That made my weekend bright and sunny.

The other huge news in my life is that I am single again (THAT'S a story I'll tell anyone who asks...) and dating. Now let me assure any and all of you reading this: Dating in L.A. sucks more than almost anything sucky you can think of. Agghh! Oh, and try to find a Pagan woman to date!! Yea, right... I will say (and I hope you're all sitting down) that I've vowed to only date women 35 years old and over. And I want to find someone stable and sane. (Yes, there are big changes afoot...).

Beyond that, I continue to take art classes (my new life project, to paint), play gigs in bars and do music programs in schools, and think of all of you. Sometimes all at the same time. (The children get very confused on those days).

If anyone has a disk of Photoshop 7.0 or better, I need one desperately---I accidently deleted some "personal info" on my program, and it won't load. Anyone who can mail me a disk would be my new best friend.
